BMW X5 Security Plus resists bigger bullets

BMW is expanding their range of armored vehicles by introducing the new X5 Security Plus. Designed for businessmen and politicians who are targeted by assassins and kidnappers, the new Plus model features a “class 6″ resistance rating which offers protection against AK-47 assault rifles and less powerful weapons.

In order to successfully defend against these kinds of attacks, BMW has specifically outfitted the X5 Security Plus with high-performance steel moldings and panels, added body joint protection, a fragment resistant polycarbonate coating, splinter resistant technology, and special tires which can be driven up to 90 miles at speeds of up to 50 mph even if they are completely deflated. To deal with this added weight, BMW equipped the armored X5 with stronger springs and dampers, a high-performance braking system, and a revised chassis control system with active roll stabilization.

The crossover also features an intercom that allows occupants to remain safely in the vehicle while talking to individuals located outside. If a fast getaway is required, the driver can activate the audible and visual alarm system which warns fellow motorists to get out of the way.

Power is provided by BMW’s 355 hp 4.8L V8 engine. The X5’s performance is hampered by the additional weight of the armored pieces, as 0-60 mph takes a nerve-wracking 8.0 seconds now, while the top speed is limited to only 112 mph. Lower performance can never be a good thing when running from turban assassins.
